The Maxwell Demon

The Thought Experiment That Challenged Everything

It's a Tuesday in 1867. James Clerk Maxwell imagines a box divided into two compartments by a wall with a tiny door. A demon — a small, careful being with impossibly fine motor skills — stands guard at this door.

The box is filled with gas molecules moving randomly. The demon watches. When a fast molecule approaches from the left, the demon opens the door and lets it through to the right. When a slow molecule approaches from the right, the demon lets it through to the left.

Slowly, steadily, without doing measurable work, the right side gets hot and the left side gets cold.

The Violation

The Second Law says heat flows from hot to cold. Not the other way around. Not spontaneously. Ever. But the demon has created a temperature gradient from nothing. No work input. Just sorting. The entropy of the isolated system has decreased.

Physics should be broken. The theory should crumble.

The Resolution

The resolution takes sixty years and comes from an unexpected direction: information theory.

The demon must measure the speed of each molecule to decide whether to open the door. Measuring takes no energy. But the demon's memory fills up. It accumulates records of every measurement. And at some point, the memory is full.

To keep operating, the demon must erase old memories. Landauer would later show that erasure costs energy — k_BT ln 2 per bit.

The demon's memory erasure generates exactly enough entropy to compensate for the entropy decrease from sorting. The Second Law survives.

What It Teaches Us

The demon teaches us that information is physical. Every bit stored in the demon's memory occupies a physical state. Erasing that bit is a physical operation with thermodynamic consequences.

The demon blurs the line between thermodynamics and information. The line wasn't there. Information is a physical quantity, just like energy or entropy.

The Demon Lives On

Modern experiments have built real-world analogues: single-electron boxes that sort electrons by energy, feedback cooling of mechanical oscillators, information engines that convert measured information into work. They all confirm: the Second Law holds, but only when you count the entropy cost of information processing.

The demon taught us that knowledge costs energy. The universe charges for information. And the bill always comes due.

Maxwell sipped his tea and changed physics forever. The demon walked through the door and proved that the Second Law is not violated — it's just more general than we thought.
