The Maxwell

A demon at the door

Maxwell's demon is a thought experiment proposed by James Clerk Maxwell in 1867. A container of gas is divided into two chambers by a wall with a small door. A tiny being — the demon — controls the door. The demon observes individual molecules approaching the door and opens it only when a fast molecule approaches from the left and a slow one from the right, or vice versa. Over time, one chamber fills with fast (hot) molecules and the other with slow (cold) molecules. A temperature difference has appeared from nowhere. No work has been done. The Second Law of Thermodynamics appears to have been violated.

The demon does not exist. The thought experiment was never meant to produce a real machine. It was designed to test the Second Law by finding the one place where a loophole might exist. The question was not whether the demon could be built, but whether the law was absolute or conditional.

What the demon does

The demon's strategy is simple: separate fast molecules from slow ones. The fast molecules carry more kinetic energy. The slow ones carry less. By sorting them — putting the fast ones in one chamber and the slow ones in the other — the demon creates a temperature difference without expending energy. The demon does not push or pull. The demon observes and decides. The molecules do the rest.

If this were possible, it would violate the Second Law. Entropy would decrease without compensation. The temperature difference could be used to do work. A heat engine could run between the two chambers, extracting energy from what was once a single, uniform temperature. The demon would be a perpetual motion machine of the second kind — not creating energy, but creating the conditions for extracting it from a single heat source.

What the demon costs

The resolution to the paradox came much later, with the development of information theory. The demon must measure the speed of each approaching molecule. It must store that information. It must decide whether to open or close the door based on that information. And eventually, its memory fills. To continue operating, it must erase information.

Rolf Landauer showed in 1961 that erasing information is not free. It produces entropy. Specifically, erasing one bit of information produces at least k ln(2) of entropy, where k is Boltzmann's constant. The entropy produced by erasing the demon's memory is exactly equal to or greater than the entropy decrease the demon achieves by sorting molecules. The Second Law is preserved.

The demon pays for its work in information. The cost is real. The information erasure produces heat. The heat increases entropy. The net entropy change is non-negative. The demon exists only if the total entropy of the system — gas plus demon — increases.

What this means

Information is physical. This is the conclusion that the demon forces us to accept. You cannot separate computation from thermodynamics. Measuring, storing, and erasing information are physical processes that produce entropy. The act of knowing has a thermodynamic cost.

This has implications that extend far beyond a thought experiment about a tiny being at a door. It means that every computer — every modern computer, every phone, every server — is a thermodynamic engine. Its processing produces heat. Its memory writes erase information. Its logic gates are, at the most fundamental level, small demons making small decisions about which molecules go where.

The Second Law is not violated. It is deepened. Information is not an abstraction. It is a physical quantity, just as mass and energy are. It has weight in the thermodynamic balance sheet.
