+# The Light Wave
+
+It began as nothing. Absolutely nothing. No air, no matter, no substance at all — just the empty stage of spacetime, vast and featureless. Then something happened. Somewhere, a charge accelerated. Maybe an electron dropped from one energy level to another inside an atom. Maybe a current started flowing in a wire. It doesn't matter what caused it. What matters is that the charge moved, and acceleration means change, and change means disturbance.

+The electric field around the charge shifted. Where the charge used to be stationary, the field was static — fixed field lines radiating outward like the quills of a sleeping hedgehog. Now the charge was moving, and the field had to adjust. But fields don't adjust instantaneously. The disturbance in the electric field propagated outward at a finite speed, and at the boundary between the old field and the new, something remarkable appeared.

+The changing electric field created a magnetic field. Maxwell's equations demanded it — a changing E produces a curling B, no current required. But then that changing magnetic field created an electric field, just as surely. Changing B creates a curling E. And then that electric field created another magnetic field, and the chain reaction continued. The two fields fed on each other, each one birthing the other in an endless cascade of mutual creation.

+They propagated outward together, side by side, locked in a precise geometric dance. The electric field pointed one way. The magnetic field pointed exactly ninety degrees from it. And both pointed exactly ninety degrees from the direction of travel. Transverse. Perpendicular. The wave moved forward while its two components oscillated at right angles to each other and to the direction of motion. Purely transverse electromagnetic radiation.

+The wave didn't need anything to travel through. This was the most shocking thing about it. Sound waves need air or water or some material to compress and rarefy. Water waves need water. But this wave — light, electromagnetic radiation — needed nothing. It propagated through perfect vacuum because the electric and magnetic fields sustained each other. Each field was its own medium. The electric field propagated through space by creating magnetic field, and the magnetic field propagated through space by creating electric field. The wave carried its own medium within itself.

+Its speed was determined by two fundamental constants of the universe: epsilon naught, the permittivity of free space, and mu naught, the permeability of free space. The speed of light equals one over the square root of epsilon naught times mu naught. Two numbers measured independently — one from electrostatics, one from magnetostatics — combined to predict the speed of light. When Maxwell calculated it, he got 310,740,000 meters per second. The measured value was about 314,858,000 meters per second. The discrepancy was smaller than the experimental error. The agreement was perfect.

+The wave carried energy. The energy density was proportional to the square of the electric field plus the square of the magnetic field. And it carried momentum. When the wave struck an object, it exerted pressure — radiation pressure, so small for sunlight that it wasn't detected until 1899, but real nonetheless. The wave didn't just describe something — it *did* something. It transferred energy and momentum across the emptiness of space.

+Different frequencies of this same wave appeared to us as different colors. Red light had a lower frequency than blue light. But they were all the same phenomenon — oscillating electric and magnetic fields propagating through vacuum. Radio waves at thousands of kilometers long, gamma rays at picometers — all the same thing, just different rates of oscillation. The visible spectrum was a tiny window in an enormous spectrum that stretched in both directions without limit.

+The wave traveled from distant stars across the vacuum of space to reach our eyes. It traveled from the filament of a light bulb to illuminate a room. It traveled through the glass of a fiber optic cable carrying voices across oceans. Every time you see something, you are witnessing an electromagnetic wave entering your eye, and every time you feel warmth from sunlight, you are witnessing an electromagnetic wave transferring its energy to your skin.

+It is, quite literally, the light wave. A self-sustaining oscillation of electric and magnetic field, propagating through the emptiness of space at the universal speed limit, carrying energy from its source to wherever it is absorbed. No medium required. No exception. Just the fields, obeying Maxwell's equations, doing exactly what the equations demanded, creating each other over and over, marching forward forever.
