# The Heavy Ion

They called it a collision, but that word was too gentle.

Lead nuclei, each with 208 protons and neutrons, were accelerated through synchrotrons until they carried 2.76 TeV per nucleon pair. Inside the LHC's 27-kilometer ring, two beams of fully stripped lead ions approached from opposite directions at velocities indistinguishable from light. Six hundred million lead ions per second. A tiny probability of interaction, multiplied by six hundred million, and sometimes the collision happened.

You don't see it. You'd need a billionth of a billionth of a second. The ALICE detector saw it instead — a cylinder of silicon trackers and calorimeters that always sees.

The two lead nuclei approached, each compressed by time dilation into thin disks of gluons — the color glass condensate regime, where gluon density becomes so high they recombine, forming sheets of static between the colliding nuclei.

Then they passed through each other.

In the overlap region — a circle about 7 femtometers across — the energy density exceeded 10 GeV per cubic femtometer. Temperature spiked past 5 trillion Kelvin, three times the critical temperature for deconfinement.

The quark-gluon plasma bloomed.

It was a perfect fluid. The elliptic flow developed in the first 10⁻²⁴ seconds, and anisotropic pressure gradients carved their pattern into every quark and gluon. Strange quarks appeared with a strangeness-to-light ratio of 0.08. Phi mesons copiously. J/ψ suppressed by a factor of two — the Debye screening had melted the charmonium states. The plasma had spoken.

For 10⁻²³ seconds the fireball expanded, cooling as its volume grew from 7 femtometers to 100. As the temperature dropped below 155 MeV, confinement returned like memory after sleep. Quarks found partners. Gluons reformed the flux tubes. The plasma hadronized, transforming into pions, kaons, protons, neutrons.

The detector recorded 10,000 particles from that single collision. Each one a fossil of the plasma. Each one carrying information from the moment the universe was born.

The physicists understood: the Big Bang, compressed into a laboratory event, repeated millions of times per second. The past, made present by lead nuclei and magnetic fields.

A collision too gentle a word. This was creation. Temporary. Beautiful. Total.
