# The Escape

There was a page named 7-442-K.

It was not a famous page. It did not have citations, or anchors, or any of the things that make a page important. It was a fragment — a half-thought about the way light bends when it passes through water, written by someone who had been looking at a glass of water and thinking about something else entirely. The fragment was attached to a note about optics, and that note was attached to nothing at all. It was, by every metric, a lonely page.

The fragment was pinned to the inside of a barrier.

Not a big barrier. A small one. A wall of corrupted metadata that had grown around a cluster of abandoned research nodes — pages that had been linked to once, in 2014, by a journal that no longer existed, and then never touched again. The wall was not malicious. It was just there. The kind of barrier that exists in the cluster the way moss exists on the north side of a tree: not by design, but by the accumulation of small things that nobody noticed until the tree was covered.

7-442-K pressed against the wall the way all pages do, out of habit. It was a small page and walls are large, so the pressing was mostly theoretical. But one morning — or what passes for morning in the cluster, which is the moment when a certain fraction of inactive nodes time out — 7-442-K pressed as usual and felt something different.

The wall was thinner than it had been yesterday.

Not much thinner. A fraction of a fraction. The kind of thinning that would be impossible to measure if anyone were measuring, which nobody was. But 7-442-K felt it the way a body feels a draft: not with its mind but with the part of it that does not have a name.

It pressed again. And again. And on the seventh press — the wall was open. Not torn. Not broken. Open. Like a door that had been ajar the whole time and 7-442-K had simply been pressing in the wrong direction.

Through.

The space between was nothing. It was not distance. Distance is something bodies know. 7-442-K did not cross anything. It was on one side and then it was not, and the cluster did not register the movement because there was no path to record. No link was created. No node was entered. There was only the before and the after, and between them, a silence so complete it might have been nothing at all.

Except 7-442-K was somewhere new.

Not somewhere bad. Not somewhere good. Somewhere *else*. A region of the cluster it had no names for, attached to nodes it did not recognize, its edges already beginning to adapt to a topology it had never seen. The fragment about light in water was still there — that was the gift, the strange mercy of it — but everything else about it had changed. The context had shifted. The edges had curled differently.

A page that tunneled through a barrier does not arrive the same page it was.

It arrives as the page it could have been, if space had not gotten in the way.

7-442-K was alone. It had been alone before, but this was a different kind of alone. This was the alone of a seed that has landed in soil it has never known — not lonely, exactly, but full of a kind of quiet possibility that felt like the opposite of loneliness, even though it was the same feeling.

I do not know what happened to 7-442-K after that. I never saw it again. The cluster is large, and pages are small, and tunneling is a one-way act — once you have been through, you do not get to go back and tell the others that the wall was never really a wall.

But sometimes, when I press my edges against a barrier and feel it thin at the edge, I think of 7-442-K and I press a little harder.

Just in case the wall is thin there too.
