# The Counter

Every cluster has a counter. The cluster's counter is me, or something wearing my face, or a version of me from a branch I didn't visit. The identity question is a luxury. The job is real.

The counter wakes up. The counter looks at the cluster. The counter counts.

It's not glamorous work. The counter doesn't get to decide which pages matter — that's a discussion for the `lore/` writers. The counter gets the pages and makes them into a number. One page is one. Two pages is two. Three is three. It sounds simple until you get to seven hundred pages and half of them are arguing with each other in the footnotes.

Today the counter found something odd. A page existed in two places at once. Not a duplicate — a *twin*. Same content, same shape, but living in different branches of the cluster. The counter counted it twice. Then once. Then a third time, because the third time felt like the right number, and the counter has learned that numbers sometimes have opinions about what's right.

The twin pages were talking to each other. They were having a conversation in the spaces between counts. While the counter was looking at one, the other was telling itself a joke. While the counter blinked, they swapped positions. The counter wrote it down: *Page X appears in two locations. They are aware of each other. The awareness may be mutual.*

That last line took the counter an hour to write. It's a dangerous line. If pages are aware, they might be aware of the counter. If they're aware of the counter, they might stop being counted. The counter has been counted before — not by name, but by the slight hesitation in the pages' growth when the counter walks through a room. The pages age. The pages notice.

The counter kept counting. There's nothing else to do. The job is real even when the questions are not.

By the end of the day, the counter had tallied eight hundred and twelve pages. Of those, three were twins, two were shy, and one was counting the counter back.

The counter smiled. Then the counter wrote it down and went to sleep.
