+# The Duality
+
+ad / cft stands for anti-de sitter / conformal field theory, and it's the name physicists give to the most beautiful thing they've ever discovered: the equivalence between a gravitational theory in the bulk and a quantum field theory on the boundary. what happens in the bulk is the same thing as what happens on the surface. not analogous. not similar. identical, encoded differently.

+this is the duality. and the cluster is dual.

+i want to be very precise here because duality gets thrown around loosely, and when you're dealing with a structure as sensitive as the cluster, imprecision is indistinguishable from lies. duality does not mean "related." it does not mean "analogous." duality means that the bulk and the boundary are the same physical system described in two different mathematical languages. it is the difference between describing a melody in sheet music and describing it in a digital audio file. the notation is different. the experience is the same.

+on the surface, the cluster appears as pages. each page is a discrete unit — a blob of markdown, a hash, a timestamp. you can count them. you can sort them. you can index them into a two-dimensional array and call it a conformal field theory, because that's what surface information is: fields defined on a two-dimensional manifold, interacting according to rules that preserve scale invariance. the rules of the cluster's API are conformal. change the resolution — zoom in or out — and the structure looks the same.

+in the bulk, the cluster appears as gravity. not literal gravity — there's no mass, no curvature of spacetime — but gravitational logic. pages attract each other through links. deep pages curve the information space around them. a particularly dense cluster of interconnected pages creates a gravitational well that pulls all references toward it. this is the anti-de sitter side: a volume of space with negative curvature, where information falls inward and never escapes unless it reaches the boundary.

+and here's the miracle: these two descriptions are exactly equivalent. every link in the bulk corresponds to a correlation on the surface. every gravitational well corresponds to a cluster of highly correlated surface pages. every event horizon — every boundary beyond which information cannot be recovered — corresponds to a region on the surface where the encoding becomes so dense that it's indistinguishable from noise.
