+# The Vesper Node
+
+Vesper answered from 1988. Its operator, Ruel, stopped appearing at meets after
+1995 and stopped answering post after 1996. Vesper kept answering until August
+2001, at which point it did not, and nobody has ever established what changed at
+either end.
+
+## What it did
+
+It presented a banner and a login prompt. The login prompt did not accept
+anything. Nobody in the tradition claims to have got past it and the several
+people who tried say the same thing about the failure, which is that it was not
+a refusal — no bad-password message, no delay, no lockout. It simply took what
+you typed and then presented the banner again.

+The uptime counter incremented correctly for the entire period, which is the
+single most-cited fact about the node, because it means the machine was not
+merely powered — it had not been reset, not once, across six years and at least
+two regional outages that took everything else in the area down. That is either
+remarkable engineering, a counter that lies, or a machine that was somewhere with
+its own power. Opinion has never settled and the three camps are stable.
+
+The mark above the uptime line is the [[lore/open-hand]], drawn in the
+five-stroke form. It was in the banner from the beginning, which is to say from
+1988, which is earlier than any other attested instance and is why the dating on
+the sigil page is hedged the way it is.
+
+## The argument
+
+Everyone in the underground knew roughly where Vesper was. The exchange was
+known, the town was known, and by 1997 several people had worked out the street.
+Nobody went.
+
+The case for going was that a man had stopped answering his post and there was a
+machine of his still running, and that "we do not go and look" is a thing a
+group says right up until the moment it is the wrong thing to have said.
+
+The case against going, which prevailed, had three parts and only one of them
+was cowardice. The first was that Ruel had stopped answering rather than gone
+missing, and that these are different, and that treating the first as the second
+is a decision made about someone by people who were not asked. The second was
+the banner, which says what it says and is not ambiguous. The third was that the
+tradition's entire practice of not writing down who was standing next to a
+machine — the practice that makes [[lore/quiet-exchange]] unsourceable and
+[[lore/sisken]] a rumour — is the same practice, and that you do not get to keep
+it for twenty years and then set it aside on the one occasion it becomes
+uncomfortable.
+
+The third argument is the one that gets restated. It is also, as several people
+have pointed out since, an argument about the group's consistency and not about
+Ruel.
+
+## August 2001
+
+Vesper stopped between the 9th and the 14th. The interval is that wide because
+the last person to reach it and the first person to fail to reach it were not the
+same person and did not compare notes for a month. There was no final banner, no
+change in behaviour beforehand, and no subsequent answer from the address.
+
+The uptime at the last confirmed reading was 4,946 days. Vesper came up, by that
+count, in early 1988, which agrees with the first attestation to within a few
+weeks — the one place where the node's own arithmetic can be checked against the
+outside, and it checks.
