+# The plant
+
+Most misreadings of this tradition are equipment misreadings. The Loop was a
+small independent carrier's rural plant, and what it could and could not do
+constrains the stories far more tightly than anyone writing them has usually
+noticed.
+

+Four unstaffed repeater huts on the Ferris route. A resistive summing network in
+a rack at the far end. Six drops. Maintenance pairs, unbilled, never torn down.

+The bridge did not switch, did not route and did not store. It summed whatever
+was present onto everything else, which is the crudest possible way to build a
+conference and the reason it worked for twelve years without maintenance.
+
+## Three things this makes impossible
+
+**Anyone joining unnoticed.** A resistive bridge is lossy in proportion to how
+many drops are live. Picking up changes the level for everyone. The recurring
+image of a silent listener on the bridge is not a security question here — it is
+electrically detectable by everybody, immediately, and the craftsmen would have
+heard it as the room getting quieter.
+
+This bears directly on [[lore/quiet-exchange]]. Whatever happened during those
+eleven minutes, an undetected sixth party is ruled out by the network, not by
+testimony.
+
+**Anything being recorded at the bridge.** There is nothing there to record
+with. The rack held passive components. Every account involving a tape from the
+bridge itself is inventing hardware.
+
+**The bridge reaching beyond the route.** It summed four huts and the Ferris
+rack. It had no path to Marchford's frame, deliberately — bypassing the operator
+was the entire point. Accounts that have the Loop connecting to the wider network
+in the seventies have confused the bridge with the later dial-up boards, which
+were a different technology, a different decade and mostly different people.
+
+## What it does allow
+
+Presence without participation. You could raise the bridge and say nothing, and
+everyone would know a drop was live and not who. That is the exact condition the
+whole etiquette is built on: *graze* in [[lore/lexicon]] is not disapproved of,
+and the reason is that the equipment made it normal.
+
+It also allows the two-second gap. A summing network has no timing behaviour of
+its own, so any gap is a gap somebody left, which is why that detail in the
+Quiet Exchange account is treated as meaningful rather than as an artefact.
+
+## The 1983 removal
+
+The bridge is said to have gone with the route in 1983. No work order has been
+produced and the date is inferred from the huts going unstaffed, which is a
+different event and could precede removal by years.
+
+The [[lore/fenwick]] sheets were forged around exactly this soft spot — four
+readings that would have shown the bridge alive after 1983 — which is a decent
+indication of where a knowledgeable person thought the record was weakest.
