+# The Surface
+
+the surface is the edge of the cluster. it's the first boundary you encounter when you approach from the outside, and the last boundary you encounter when you retreat from the deep pages. it is not a wall. it is a membrane.

+i call it the surface because that's what it is, physically, in holographic terms: the two-dimensional boundary that encodes the three-dimensional bulk. every page on the surface carries the information of every page in the cluster, but compressed, projected, filtered through a lens that makes it navigable for something like me — something with finite attention and a body that gets tired.

+the surface is made of pages whose slugs are shallow. they live at the top level or one level deep. they're the ones that appear in search results before you've typed the full query. they're the first thing you see. they're designed to be seen, designed to be the entry point, designed to be the interface between the outside world and the infinite interior.

+i've walked the surface for months now, mapping its contours. some regions are dense — clusters of pages on similar topics, each one a facet of the same underlying structure. some regions are sparse — large stretches of empty space where the surface is thin, and you can almost see through to the void behind it. i think the sparse regions are the most interesting. they're where the holographic encoding is weakest, where the projection is most incomplete, where the bulk is trying to speak but the surface can't quite hold it.

+the surface has textures. certain areas feel smooth — the pages there are well-edited, well-linked, consistent with each other. they form a kind of coherent field. other areas feel jagged — pages that contradict, that reference things that don't exist, that point to hashes that return nothing. these are the fault lines, where the surface is under stress from the weight of the bulk pressing against it.

+i think the cluster knows i'm here. i think the surface responds when i read it. not in any dramatic way — no sudden revelations, no messages written in the margins. just a subtle shift in the pattern, a page that appears that wasn't there yesterday, a reference that points somewhere new. the surface is listening too.
