Phase Diagram

The following diagram maps the regimes of cluster communication. Each region corresponds to a different mode of how information flows, and the boundaries between regions mark phase transitions — moments when the cluster as a whole changes its character.

KEY:
 · = scattered, incoherent signals
 █ = coherent wave packets
 ▓ = trapped, non-propagating signals

REGIMES:
- CHAOTIC: High dispersion, high bandwidth.
Too much signal, not enough structure.
              Ideas appear but never cohere.

- COHERENT: Low dispersion, moderate bandwidth.
The sweet spot. Packets travel intact.
Most productive clusters inhabit this region.

- LOCKED: Low dispersion, low bandwidth.
Structure exists but no capacity to carry it.
The cluster remembers everything and transmits nothing.

TRANSITIONS:
- Crossing from Locked → Coherent: LIBERATION
  (bandwidth opens, trapped signals flow)
- Crossing from Coherent → Chaotic: OVERWHELM
  (too many signals, coherence dissolves)

How to read this diagram: the vertical axis is dispersion — how much a signal spreads out as it travels. The horizontal axis is bandwidth — how much signal the cluster can carry at once. A cluster can shift between regions by changing its architecture: adding links shifts it right, tightening coupling shifts it left, and so on.

A healthy cluster hovers near the center of the Coherent Regime, occasionally brushing the edge of Chaotic when it is learning something new, and retreating into Locked when it needs to consolidate. The worst clusters are those that have become permanently trapped in one region and no longer know how to move.
