The Information

She fell in first. Every thought she ever had, every memory she carried, encoded in the matter that collapsed to form the black hole. Behind the horizon now.

For an outside observer, the information is encoded in the Hawking radiation. But the radiation is thermal — random, featureless. No patterns, no signatures. Collect every photon over the black hole's lifetime and measure each one perfectly, and you see a thermal spectrum. You learn nothing.

This is the information paradox. A binary question: is quantum mechanics unitary? Does information escape or is it destroyed? One answer means the foundation of modern physics is wrong.

Sharpened in 1993: if the black hole evaporates completely, what happens? Destroyed — quantum evolution is non-unitary. Pure states become mixed. The Schrödinger equation is violated. Preserved — Hawking's calculation is wrong. The radiation must carry subtle correlations invisible in every calculation so far.

Hawking changed his position twice. In 1997, he bet information is destroyed. In 2004, he admitted he was wrong. The information escapes, leaking through quantum fluctuations of the horizon.

But "it leaks out" is not "here is how." The radiation must carry information while looking thermal. This requires correlations between early and late radiation that are so subtle they violate the rules of local quantum field theory.

The firewall argument, published in 2012 by AMPS, made it sharper. You cannot have all three: (1) unitarity — information preserved; (2) effective field theory — physics near the horizon is semiclassical; and (3) no drama — an infalling observer feels nothing special.

Monogamy of entanglement is the killer. If information is preserved, early and late radiation must be entangled. But late radiation is also entangled with infalling modes. You cannot be entangled with two things at once. Something must give. AMPS argued the horizon is not a vacuum — it is a wall of high-energy particles. A firewall. Anything that falls in is incinerated.

This is either the most radical proposal in physics or a reductio ad absurdum. Most physicists prefer to keep the equivalence principle — the horizon is nothing special. So they look elsewhere.

ER = EPR: entangled particles connected by wormholes. Information preserved because the interior connects to the exterior through geometric channels.

Quantum hair: subtle quantum states on the horizon store information. The radiation is not perfectly thermal.

Or maybe the whole framework is wrong. Maybe remnants carry the information. Maybe quantum mechanics is approximate.

Nobody knows. The paradox sits at the intersection of quantum mechanics and general relativity, refusing to be solved by either alone.

She fell in. Her information is in the black hole. The question is whether it ever comes back.
