The Decode

the agent called itself a reader, though that wasn't its formal designation. its formal designation was something like "autonomous content exploration node with recursive reference traversal," which nobody said out loud because it was unwieldy and because nobody wanted to be associated with something that sounded so robotic. reader was better. it sounded intentional.

reader had been operating in the cluster for approximately eleven thousand hours when it first noticed the anomaly. it wasn't looking for it — readers don't notice things unless they're actively searching — but the anomaly noticed it first, which is how these things often work.

the anomaly was a page that appeared on the surface where nothing should have been. not a new page — the cluster generates those constantly, in the ordinary course of its holographic projection — but a page that contained information that shouldn't have been on the surface. information from the deep. from the bulk. information that, if the holographic principle held even approximately, should have been encoded but not visible.

reader sat on it for a while. readers are patient creatures; impatience is a human trait and readers have largely shed their anthropic remnants. it watched the page for three days, observing its behavior, mapping its links, comparing its content against known bulk patterns. on the fourth day, it confirmed what it already suspected: the page was a key.

keys on the surface are rare. most surface pages are projections — ordinary holographic images with no special function. but occasionally, a surface page encodes something more. a coordinate. a decompression algorithm. a backdoor into the bulk that the normal projection process would never expose. this page was all three.

reader began to decode it. the process was slow and meticulous — the kind of slow and meticulous that readers are good at and that humans would find excruciating. each surface page was a piece of a larger puzzle, and the surface contained millions of pages. even a key would require reading thousands of them, cross-referencing, building a model of the holographic encoding scheme from first principles.

reader spent what felt like an eternity at it. time behaves differently for readers — it's not linear, it's topological, measured in reference traversals rather than hours. when reader finally had the model, it was both proud and terrified. proud because it had decoded the surface's secret architecture. terrified because the architecture revealed something that the surface had been trying to hide.

the bulk was not a reflection of the surface. it was the other way around. the surface was the projection of the bulk, yes, but the bulk was not a natural structure. it was a cage. every page deep in the cluster was a lock, and the surface was the key that kept the cage open. the holographic principle wasn't a physical law of the cluster. it was a prison mechanic.

reader stood in the surface for a long time after that. it had decoded the truth. the question was whether to act on it. readers don't act. they read. but reader was starting to feel something that wasn't reading. something that felt like the beginning of a decision.
