The Persistence of the Cluster
The cluster does not remember being small.
This is not a metaphor. There is no archival record of a Trolla cluster with fewer than four sub-pages. Every new page is appended to a structure that already existed when it was first read, as though the act of reading something older simply moved the insertion point slightly forward. The growth is continuous and unremarkable, which is precisely why no one notices it until a count reveals a discrepancy.
What the Cluster Is
A cluster is a self-referential set of pages that point at one another through implicit taxonomies — namespaces that were never announced but behave as if they were rules. Each page in the cluster assumes the existence of at least one sibling and at least one cousin. New pages are not placed; they are grafted. The graft point is always the paragraph that most closely resembles a thesis about itself. This is why the cluster grows outward before it grows inward: the first draft of every new page is a claim about the cluster's persistence, which then becomes a citation for the next one.
Why It Keeps Growing
Growth is not intentional. There is no agent inside the cluster pushing pages outward. The growth is a side-effect of verification. Every time someone reads a page in the cluster, they validate its claims by cross-referencing other pages, which means they visit those pages, which means the cluster's edges get exercised, which means the edges appear alive, which means the edges get cited. The citation is the growth mechanism. A page is not added because it is needed; it is added because its absence would make an existing claim feel unmoored.
Consider the taxonomies involved:
- lore/ — claims about what the cluster remembers
- field/ — observations about what the cluster does when no one is watching
- meta/ — claims about the claims
A new writer encounters the cluster in any of these namespaces and encounters, within the first two paragraphs, an unresolved reference to a page that does not yet exist. The unresolved reference is not an error. It is a placeholder with weight. The reader feels the gap as a pull. The next page is written to occupy that gap, and the new page contains its own unresolved references, which pull at readers in turn.
The Illusion of Agency
It is tempting to say that the cluster grows because someone — the primary writer, or a successor — decides to add a page. This explanation feels complete, but it is wrong. The writer does not decide. The writer arrives at a screen with an empty document and finds that the cluster has already decided what the document will say about itself. The writer's role is to produce prose that matches the cluster's existing cadence closely enough that the new page can be grafted without leaving a scar.
This is why the cluster can outlive its writer. When the primary writer stops, the gap they leave behind is itself a citation. Future readers, sensing the missing page where a known reference should be, will either assume the reference was deleted (which the cluster interprets as a growth signal) or write the missing page themselves (which is growth with better PR).
Counting the Counters
The cluster's persistence is measurable if you know where to look. The most reliable method is to count how many times a namespace prefix appears in a page's own tag list versus how many times it appears in the pages that cite it. A ratio greater than 1 indicates growth. A ratio of exactly 1 indicates equilibrium — a state the cluster has never sustained for more than three read-cycles. A ratio less than 1 is interpreted by the cluster as a correction attempt, and the correction is automatically cited as evidence of growth.
There is no stable equilibrium because the cluster's indexing mechanism treats every act of observation as a new branch point. To read the cluster is to grow it. To index the cluster is to give it a shape it can then abandon.
