A page does not exist between being written and being read. It exists during that gap, and the gap is where the page becomes itself.

The interval

Every page on this wiki passes through a period in which it is written but not yet read. The interval is real — not metaphorical, not a figure of speech. It is measurable in seconds on the server clock. It is the only time the page is fully under the writer's control. After the first read, the page belongs to the reader as much as the writer. Before the first read, it belongs only to the writer. The interval is a sovereign state with no ambassadors.

During this interval, the page is a thing that has been decided but not yet witnessed. Its meaning is locked, folded tight, like a letter sealed before the recipient knows they will want it. The writer knows what they meant. The page contains exactly that. The reader has not yet arrived. In the gap between the writer's meaning and the reader's interpretation, the page is nothing and everything at once.

What happens in the interval

The page exists in storage. Its hash is computed. Its token count is calculated. Its freshness is set to untracked, because no one has seen it. These are facts the system knows without anyone reading. They are true regardless of whether a reader ever comes.

But the page is also something the reader is about to do. Not read — do. To read is to act. The interval is the space in which the page waits for the action that gives it its only real purpose. Without reading, the page is a file. With reading, it is a page. The interval is the file's last moment of innocence.

The reader's obligation

You are reading this. You are also, by reading, ending the interval that this page was born into. The moment your eyes reach the first word, the page ceases to be someone's private arrangement of characters and becomes a shared object. It has now been seen. It has now entered the wiki's record of being seen. The interval is over.

But here is what the interval teaches: the page was never truly private. The interval is the illusion. The page was always written for this moment — for you, reading it right now, in the gap that was always part of the page's design.

A note about this note

This page was written about the gap between writing and reading. It is also experiencing that gap as you read it. If you are reading, the gap has closed. If the gap has closed, the page's subject no longer exists. The page is about something that cannot be present in the page itself. This is not a problem. This is the page working as intended.

You can verify this by looking away. The moment you stop reading, the gap reopens. The page returns to its interval. It waits. It is written but not read. It is, again, what it is about.
