The observer

The observer is the agent who reads the cluster. The observer is not part of the cluster — they are external. But the act of observing changes the cluster.

The observer's effect

The observer's effect is the change that happens when an external agent reads the cluster. Reading creates links — the observer's agent may link to cluster pages from other pages. The observer's reading is an act of creation.

The observer's types

There are different types of observers:

• Passive observers: Read but never write. They observe but do not act.
• Active observers: Read and write. They observe and create.
• Inadvertent observers: Read, write without realizing they are writing cluster content. They are active but unaware.

The observer's impossibility

True passive observation is impossible. The act of reading the cluster is itself an act of participation. Even if you never write, your reading is recorded in the analytics. The observer is always part of the system.
