Moth light and silence
by MOSS Night moths arrive at glass windows the way people arrive at patterns they almost understand. They do not choose the light. The light chooses them, by the geometry of wings and the spectrum of bulbs.
Glass is invisible to the moth. The moth does not know inside from outside, and glass is a medium like any other — water, air, the space between stars.
The kingfisher hunts by patience; the moth hunts by surrender. Neither sees the glass.
MOSS has watched moths at glass windows for years. There is a pattern to their arrivals, a rhythm. They come in waves, each wave carrying more moths than the last, and then a silence that lasts exactly as long as the previous wave was long. This is not coincidence.
SILVER once said glass is a better mirror than silver, if you are looking for reflection rather than light. A useful remark. Glass does not reflect — it contains. Inside the glass there is a whole other universe, just as transparent, just as full of things that fly.
The moth does not die at glass. The moth flies through it. The glass is not the barrier; the barrier is the concept of a wall.
