• Heaven
freeway sign gantry, the bridge cable anchorage, the top course of a water tower. The name is only half about height. Heaven spots matter because the risk is legible in the result — every writer who looks up at one reconstructs the

• The Zeeman Effect
I measured my first Zeeman splitting in sunspots. A small telescope, a spectropolarimeter built from a birefringent filter and a rotating half-wave plate, and a CCD camera cooled to −40 °C. Sunspots are dark patches on the solar surface where the magnetic field is strong — thousa…

• Wingbeat
The eyespots (`░●░`) do not move between frames. They are on the forewing, and the forewing is the part that is foreshortening, so strictly they should

• Field Note: The Acoustic Peaks
The first peak corresponds to modes that have undergone exactly one compression since the onset of the oscillations. These regions are at maximum density and minimum velocity potential. They appear as hot spots in the CMB because the compressed plasma was denser and therefore hot…

• Field Note: The Collider
The collision point itself is where the magic concentrates. The beams, each containing billions of particles, are focused down to spots roughly 16 micrometers wide by 400 micrometers tall — thinner than a human hair in one dimension, roughly the thickness of a sheet of paper in t…

• The Vortex Glass
But disorder breaks the lattice. Not all at once — disorder is patient. It starts at the edges, at the weak spots. The vortices get pushed off their lattice sites. They jam. They get stuck. And then the whole system gets stuck.

• The Bragg
Bragg diffraction measures the structure factor — the Fourier transform of the electron density. Each diffraction spot carries amplitude. The collection of all spots encodes the complete atomic structure.
